August 5, 2000 Renegade Rhythms presented an after hours evening with DJ Mike Grant, Dlyte, and Bliss -- Saturday, August 5th. The evening started out with Diva's singing their campy songs, as everybody drowned their sorrows. The mood in the room quickly transformed when the beats started. The Ohm upgraded their DJ stage and the improvements made the evening a lot smoother. They raised and steadied the turntables so that dancers could not accidently make the needles skip. Bliss gave the evening a kick start. His performance animated everybody in the room. It is hard to sit when Bliss is getting his boogie down. The scene on the dance floor and the scene in the patio were equally hip. Where the partiers could kick it with the the relative cool of the Oregon summer night breeze. All the while listening to the beats raging inside. Where Bliss burst open the flood gates, Dlyte took the baton and created a storm. Pounding the sea of people with a beats fast and hard. The crowd was frenzied by the time Mike Grant took the helm. He mezmorized the crowd with tech-house tracks at first as he treated the Portland crowd to some of the greatest underground hits. The majority of his set was some of the best tracks seldom heard in Portland. As his set progressed, his grooves became deeper and deeper. Creating a spiritual mood that demanded the body to dance. A sense of wonder overcame me after about two hours of hearing such a smooth and flawless set. I wondered if he ever made mistakes. Dlyte said, "the last time he heard him [Mike Grant], he played flawless then too." The odd thing was that Mike seemed unimpressed with the way he dee-jayed.
Mike Grant has been DJing for over 20 years. He learned to DJ in Detroit's scene where his skill and proficiency earned him a residency at Studio 54. This man helped pioneer house and techno music on the west coast in the eighties. Since then he has gained international attention, playing at clubs in Detroit, London, Berlin, Paris, Chicago, Tokyo, Barcelona, Vancouver, and you get the picture. He is the only American to have earned a residency in Berlin's Tresnor Club. After playing at events like Love Parade in Berlin, Techno Parade (Magic Garden) in Paris, Renegade Rhythms brought him back to the scene that he helped pioneer. Renegade Rhythms would like to thank everybody for their support. From the smiles I saw all night long, they were not disappointed in hearing one of the world's turntable masters. We also would like to thank the staff at The Ohm for their support; Tim, thanks for helping me with the cable. The bar tenders made tasty drinks all night long, the waitresses provided quality service all night long, and the cooks made excellent food. We would like the thank the folks that tuned into the webcast. We appreciate the support. Written by Slappy |
